The towel this week has shown you what love looks like when it stoops. But the table has a bigger story to tell.

Before the upper room, before the foot washing, before any of this week, there was a problem. Not a small one. We walked away. Not accidentally, not innocently, we chose our own way over God’s, and the distance that created was not something we could close from our side. The gap was too wide. The debt too great. We couldn’t earn our way back, couldn’t serve our way back, couldn’t be good enough or humble enough or devoted enough to get there.

So He came.

John 3:16 is so familiar that we can read it sometimes without feeling it. But sit with it for a moment. God so loved, not tolerated, not managed, not reluctantly forgave, loved. The world. Not the deserving, not the faithful, not the ones who had it together. The world. That He gave. Not borrowed. Not offered conditionally. Gave. His one and only Son.

Paul puts it even more starkly in Romans 5: while we were still sinners. Not after we cleaned ourselves up. Not after we showed remorse or made amends. While we were still the problem, He became the solution.

The Passover table has held unleavened bread and wine before. Every year, in houses across Israel, the same elements were placed on the same kind of table, the bread flat and pure, the wine unfermented, just as the Law required. Familiar objects. Ordinary in every sense.

But for the first time in 1500 years, it witnessed something none of those other tables ever had. The same bread. The same wine. But the promise had finally met the one who would keep it.

Jesus reached for the bread and broke it. And said: this is my body. Then He took the cup and said: this is my blood of the new covenant. The bread and the wine hadn't changed. But the hands holding them were the fulfilment of everything they had ever pointed toward.

The table didn’t witness an invention. It witnessed an arrival. The items it held that night were the same items it had always held. But the one who picked them up was the one they had always been waiting for.

The bread is His body, broken not because He had to, but because He chose to. Because getting us back was worth everything it cost. The cup is His blood, the new covenant, the agreement sealed not with promises we make but with a price He paid.

He knew exactly who was sitting around that table when He broke it. The table wasn’t set for perfect people. It was set for people who had been prepared. The disciples who gathered around it that night were far from perfect, one would betray Him, one would deny Him, all would scatter before morning. But the towel had done its work. They came ready. And that was enough.

The table was there because He loved them. It’s here because He loves you.

The towel has prepared you to sit at it. Today, just sit with what it cost to set it.
